The Oosterdok area is a developing area for new buildings based on modern architecture. A nice museum to visit in this area is the Maritime Museum. In this museum you can see paintings of Naval Battles the Dutch won in the 17th century and a portrait of Admiral Michiel De Ruyter, the most famous admiral Holland ever had. You can even step on a real old steamboat dating back to 1900. Impressive is the replica of an 18th century merchant ship called the Amsterdam. You can walk on this ship and get a good idea of how life was on board for the sailors, passengers and officers in those days.

Amsterdam has a rich architectural history. The oldest building in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk or the old church consecrated in 1306. It is located in the oldest part called the Wallen. Wallen means walls in Dutch and these walls used to protect the city in the Middle Ages against intruders. This church is known for its old pipe organ. The Dutch composer Sweelinck played on this organ.

Take a walk to the Dam Square. This square in the heart of the historical city of Amsterdam offers you great entertainment in the form of historical buildings like the Royal Palace and the prestigious Krasnapolsky Hotel. The Royal Palace now belongs to the Dutch Royal family but was once the city hall of Amsterdam built in the 17th century. When the weather is nice many locals and tourists come here to taste the typical atmosphere of Amsterdam. You can watch the street performers, feed the pigeons or even walk to the memorial. Every year on the 4th of May the Dutch commemorate the people who lost their lives during the Second World War at this memorial.
