Dam Square Highlights
At one side of the square lies the majestic Royal Palace which is the official place of residence of Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands when she is staying in town. When she is not at home the palace is partly open to the public for guided tours.
You will find the city’s busiest two shopping streets at either side of the square, the Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk. All the major Dutch and international high street names can be found here. For something a little more up market then head straight for the Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza shopping centres which can be found at the rear of the palace and in Dam Square itself.
Madame Toussauds remains as popular as ever. It looks out over the square and you will pleased to learn that the figures inside are internationally recognisable celebrities as well as the more locally identifiable Dutch TV faces. Perhaps you would like to audition for Simon Cowell or enjoy a private one to one with a famous icon from history? Many of the waxy exhibits incorporate multimedia interactivity which will certainly appeal to younger visitors as well as adults.
For yet more interactive entertainment check out the nearby Amsterdam Dungeons which provides a surprisingly long and quite scary experience for those of a strong disposition. Here you and your guests can enjoy a spooky educational experience learning about the city’s dark history. There’s even an indoor rollercoaster and a fun ghoulish gift shop at the end of the tour.
