Red Light District (The Wallen) apartments in Amsterdam

Red Light District Highlights

If you are in a group and looking for somewhere with a party atmosphere then the Red Light District is ideal with its many English style pubs and laid back coffee shops selling cannabis. New laws in the Netherlands will however restrict the sale of cannabis to only local residents who must also own a special registration card. You will also find dozens of strip clubs and bars providing live sex shows particularly catering for large groups of holiday makers. Please note that these ‘shows’ usually have a steep entrance fee and expensive drinks inside. The novelty value quickly wears off leading to disappointment for many.

If you have lots of questions about the district then why not take one of the extremely informative and interesting guided tours around the area. They last for about 1 hour, costing around 12 euros and depart from De Wallenwinkel at 3 Enge Kerksteeg. The tours are provided in Dutch and English for small groups. Check the Wallenwinkel website for more specific information.

One of the city’s most unusual visitor attractions in the Red Light District is Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic), also known as the Museum Amstelkring. One of the world’s most interesting churches, it is magically hidden away in the attic of a 17th-century canal house. The 1578 reformation transferred the city into Protestant hands and public Catholic mass was quickly outlawed. Worship could only exist if done in private, hidden away from public view. In 1661 a wealthy Catholic merchant established the church in his stately canal house where it remains to this day. It’s extremely lavish and ornate inside and certainly worth a visit. The address is Oude Zijde Voorburgwal 40 and the entrance fee is around 6 euros.
