One of the first important visiting sites, the botanical gardens, was actually formed for the medical community to create natural solutions for some of the population’s illnesses. This building can still be visited and is great to spot plants from all over the world. The Plantage remained a very popular place for the citizens to escape the busy city life and walk around all the greenery, which resulted into a project to make a city zoo called Artis in the eighteenth century. It is a great place to visit, especially if you’re with kids. A lot of the buildings still have the historical value of the origin of the place. Another monumental site is the Muiderpoort, the only city gate to remain from the Golden Age of the Dutch. It can be found at Alexanderplein.
Walking around here is so lovely. There is something to see everywhere, such as the Museumhaven, where you can see some of the ships that were used to transport all the produce coming into Amsterdam. There are also a lot of establishments to enjoy, from nice little restaurants to cool bars and vintage boutiques. The cosy street Staalstraat is a shopper’s delight, full of special stores to find original gifts, beautiful earrings, or a handbag that nobody else has. One of the nicest bars would have to be Kriterion, located at Roetersstraat, a movie theatre that is completely run by students. This place has a really cool bar, and shows modern classics and cult movies in the cinema for your pleasure.
