Highlights of the Rembrandt Square
Rembrandt Square is the perfect place to kick off your evening’s entertainment, particularly if you are visiting the city with a large group of friends. Many groups of hens and stags head here first to get in the party mood before moving on to the nearby Red Light District pubs or across to the equally lively Leidseplein. If you are feeling peckish you will find local Dutch cuisine on offer in the traditional ‘brown cafes’ in the plaza as well as classic British style pubs serving typically English cuisine including an all-day fried breakfast. For a unique drinking experience in Amsterdam head to the popular XtraCold Icebar on the edge of the square by the Blue Bridge over the Amstel. This unusual theme bar is kept permanently at minus 10 degrees Celsius and you can enjoy your drinks served in glasses made of ice. Even the walls, stools and bar itself are made entirely of ice!
Just a few minutes’ walk away behind Rembrandt Square lies possibly the world’s most beautiful cinema known as Pathe Tuschinski which was built in the stunning Art Deco style of the day some 90 years ago. It is certainly worth a visit evening if you only make it as far as the amazing foyer which features an opulent colour-changing ceiling. Also high up on the to-do list of many visitors to Amsterdam is the wonderful Floating Flower Market which is just a minute’s walk further away. Many people arrange to have authentic Dutch tulip bulbs sent to loved ones back home as a unique souvenir of their time in the city.
