Leidse Square Highlights
If you want to sample foods of the world then the Leidse Square is ideal since it offers a taste for nearly any palette in the plaza itself or in the adjacent side streets. Paradiso and Melkweg (Milky Way) here are two of Amsterdam’s most popular music venues. The latter used to be a dairy in a former life (hence the name) and the huge building now houses two good sized concert halls presenting all kinds of musical performances. A theatre, cinema, art gallery and café are also incorporated into the complex and at weekends it opens as a very popular nightclub. The extremely funny American/Dutch review bar Boom Chicago is located at the corner of the square. It is possible to purchase dinner and a comedy show together if you wish but it can be a bit tricky eating and laughing at the same time so be warned. As usual, if you pick front row seats you are likely to be featuring in the show too as audience participation is often a staple ingredient of stand-up.
During your adventures exploring Amsterdam city centre you are likely to stumble across some unusual public art works and random sculptures in the streets. They can even be found hanging from trees and on sides of buildings. One of the most popular and momentarily surprising is located on the edge of the eastern side of Leidse Square. Known locally as Iguana Park or Lizard Park, this tiny patch of grass is ‘crawling’ with life-size and very realistic bronze castings of reptiles. Many people stop, point and scream when they first notice them. This is certainly a great place for an unusual photo opportunity.
