Location

You will find the Rozengracht Apartment II, as the name suggests, on the Rozengracht. It runs just west as an extension from Dam Square, and within easy walking distance. Rozengracht is a beautiful district of Amsterdam, crossing several of the major canals. This area is known as the Canal Belt. Possibly the most beautiful and oldest part of the city, the picturesque narrow streets, long canals, little bridges and 17th century leaning canal and townhouses are absolutely breathtaking. At night time the canals are lit up beautifully by little lights under the bridges. The three main Amsterdam canal rings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as they are considered to be of great architectural and historical importance. Amazingly the characteristic leaning houses in the area narrowly missed being demolished altogether in the 1970s when many buildings had run into disrepair following the war and controversial plans were made to build a huge road to connect the city with outlying areas. Thankfully following many actual street battles with local residents, politicians and police the area was saved and the road was not built. Sadly much of the nearby Jewish district, the Waterlooplein, was destroyed already to make way for the Metro development.

Dutch people are passionate about many things and ice-skating is one of them. When the canals occasionally freeze over the government makes an announcement that the ice is thick enough to skate and millions of people grab their skates and head outdoors. Unfortunately this only happened once in the last 11 years so they have excellent skating rinks that you too can enjoy. Take tram number 9 from central Station and hop of at Kruislaan. Here you will find Jaap Eden, a huge almost Olympic size outdoor skating rink that attracts hundreds of people every weekend. It is open during the week too, and is likely to be preferably quieter for you. It’s healthy and invigorating stuff and most of all fun! The outdoor rink is not operational in the summer months. Check their website for all opening times. Don’t worry though, there is an indoor rink that is open all year round and hosts regular ice-skating discos!
