Location

This apartment is located on a canal and is in the Canal Belt of Amsterdam. The Canal Belt is a ring of canals in the centre part of Amsterdam. The Dutch word for canal is gracht. The most famous canals are the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht. Especially the houses on these canals are monumental and date from the 17th century when Amsterdam was the richest city in the world due to the spice trade with the Dutch Indies.

You are also close to the Utrechtsestraat, a street with its own unique character. It has many music shops, fashion boutiques, restaurants and old Amsterdam cafes which are called bruine kroegen which means brown pubs. Brown comes from the wooden interior and the brown walls which were once white but turned brownish because people smoke in these pubs. Try the Dutch beers or even drink a borrel. This is a shot of Dutch jenever or gin.

The Royal Carre Theatre is close by on the banks of the Amstel River and it offers shows throughout the year. The Rembrandt Square is also near and it used to be a butter market. Now it is the centre of nightlife. There are also brown pubs where the local sometimes sing Dutch folk songs which are real tear jerkers.

My friends and I have used Book Amsterdam Apartments a couple of times now, and have never been disappointed. Will defiantly use them again for my next trip to Amsterdam.
